Discover how cities can boost cycling in their cities with VeloVision - smart infrastructure assessment

Barcelona and Sarajevo trial innovative new cycling infrastructure assessment technology to improve safety and grow cycling

Paris, 18/06/2024 EIT Urban Mobility, Factual (Spain), Fluctuo (France) & Social Tech Projects (Denmark) have joined forces to help cities better assess the current state of cycling infrastructure, identify areas for improvement, and provide actionable advice to enhance the cycling experience.

VeloVision is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. The pilot project is currently underway in Barcelona and Sarajevo, where over 100km of cycling infrastructure is being analysed. At the end of the pilot, cities will have:

  • Images and road surface quality data on 100 kilometres of bike lanes
  • Concrete advice on how to improve bike infrastructure to increase cycling
  • Indicators to aid prioritising the most urgent/promising projects

VeloVision combines the three companies’ unique expertise - a comprehensive methodology, analysis and dashboard to assess cycling infrastructure more efficiently, with greater accuracy.

Social Tech’s bike-mounted, machine vision technology will scan the cycling infrastructure in the assessment locations and will capture information on road surface quality, potential hazards and safety issues, as well as air quality. The data collected will be analysed using Factual’s Lane Patrol infrastructure assessment methodology to give actionable insights on how to improve the infrastructure to boost cycling.

Fluctuo will combine the data collected, and cross this with other open data sources, like City Dive’s shared mobility feeds and connected car data, to get the full picture of what is happening in and around the target sites. The new VeloVision dashboard on City Dive will allow cities to analyse 50+ key performance indicators on the state of the infrastructure, along with AI-powered advice on how to act.
